Start with the transportation you manage
A third-party logistics provider can coordinate transportation, warehousing, fulfillment, or a combination of services. A 3PL TMS focuses on the transportation part: receiving shipment requirements, arranging the move, coordinating carriers, monitoring execution, and preparing transportation billing.
Define your scope before comparing software. A truckload brokerage, a cross-dock operation, and a parcel fulfillment warehouse may all call themselves a 3PL, but they need different tools. Write down the freight modes, handoffs, and customer reports that matter to your business.
Make every handoff understandable
A shipment may move from a customer order to an outside carrier, through a warehouse, and onto final delivery. Each handoff needs a clear owner, a planned time, an actual event, and the documents needed for the next team.
For each handoff, ask who records the event and how the next person learns about it. A shared shipment reference helps the transport desk connect a dock discrepancy or missed appointment to the customer’s order. Distinguish a manually entered update from a tracking integration when reviewing a demo.
Know where the TMS ends and WMS begins

- References: confirm purchase order, shipment and delivery reference fields remain searchable.
- Appointments: check pickup windows, delivery bookings, and changes after dispatch.
- Documents: test how a customer’s required proof of delivery becomes available to billing.
- Charges: separate transportation charges from any storage, handling or other services your company provides.
