Product boundaries vary. Some platforms provide both transportation and warehouse modules, while other operations connect separate systems. Evaluate the specific work each module can perform rather than relying on its name.
Follow an order across the handoff
Consider a 3PL shipping palletized goods for a customer. The WMS receives the release order, allocates the stock, and directs picking. The transport desk uses the TMS to arrange the carrier and book the delivery appointment.
After loading, the actual pallet count and shipping documents need to reach the transportation record. When the carrier delivers, the delivery event and proof of delivery need to reach the customer service and billing teams. A shared order reference connects those records.
Test changes as well as the happy path
- Partial dispatch: what happens when only some of the order is ready?
- Quantity change: which system updates the pallet count or weight before the carrier arrives?
- Appointment change: how does the warehouse learn that pickup has moved?
- Returns or damage: where is the discrepancy recorded and who sees it?
Decide which system owns each field, and prevent conflicting edits. Ask whether the connection is automatic, scheduled, or a manual export and import.
Choose for the work your 3PL performs
A transportation-only brokerage may prioritize a TMS without needing inventory software. A fulfillment warehouse may start with a WMS and add transportation management where it arranges freight. A combined operation should evaluate the handoff as carefully as each individual module.
